Napoleon Bonaparte is said to be the creator of miracles. It is difficult to common on his contribution and misstep to history. But he is indeed a hero, a great man and a brave leader. There are quantities of pieces of music and oil paintings composed uniquely for him. Among all these wonderful artworks, the most amazing one is the oil painting portrait by Jacques-Louis David.
Napoleon Crossing the Alps is an oil painting commemorates Napoleon's journey across the Alps in 1800, leading his army on the invasion of northern Italy. The scene was chosen by Bonaparte himself, and instructed the painter to display him “calm, mounted on a fiery steed.” The conqueror's characters are idealized, largely because he resisted attending any sittings. As a result, David had to ask his son to sit at the top of a ladder in order to capture the pose. The costume was more accurate, however, as the artist was able to borrow the suit that the emperor had worn at the battle of Marengo.
First and foremost, David's oil painting serves as an icon of imperial. So, Napoleon Crossing the Alps is no doubt the most influential propaganda as an icon among people. It is actually an eternal artwork which can undergo the view of all walks of people from generation to generation.
